NZMM Daily Playlist Challenge: 04/05/18 – Matt Henry Mendonca

NZ Music Month Playlist Challenge

The NZ Music Month Daily Playlist Challenge
4th May, 2018

Compiled by Matt Henry Mendonca.

Matt Henry Mendonca is one of the original Ambient Light crew members, and is in our opinion one of the best live music photographers around.

Known for being able to capture beautiful crisp images in even the darkest of lighting conditions, his technical knowledge is superb while still being able to show those all important aspects of emotion and humanity in his photography at the same time.

Matt’s all time favourite band is Blink 182, and he credits them as the reason he initially fell in love with music, kicking off his life long journey.

He studied music for 4 years in London, gaining an ACM accreditation in guitar and sound engineering. He was also a member of multiple live bands in this time, something he credits in developing part of his photographic style – one of his goals is to capture the images he himself would have wanted to see of his bands.

Growing up reading skate boarding magazines (and having a few failed attempts at getting into skateboarding himself) he believes part of the reason he most loves shooting wide angle photos is because of the intense fisheye shots of skateboarders doing kickflips off a flight of stairs he observed on a constant basis.

After buying a camera to use on a trip to South Africa he realised he loved capturing the moments that otherwise might have been missed, so upon his return to New Zealand he mixed his love of music with his new passion in photography and started shooting local metal and hardcore bands in small clubs in the Waikato and beyond. He soon moved on to shooting large international acts and now the sky is the limit!
