As we count down the days until the release of Gramsci’s highly anticipated fifth album ‘The Hinterlands’, the band have dropped a second track to further whet our appetites while giving another exciting glimpse of what is to come.

Following on from the album’s first powerhouse single, the auralgasmic ‘Ourselves’, the release of ‘Into the Hinterland’ is the song we need in the here and now. A sonically mesmerising track, Gramsci exquisitely navigate, and merge, seemingly paradoxical elements of light and dark, conjuring up a soundscape that creates a perfect space for reflection, introspection and perhaps most importantly, hope. This is indeed music for mindfulness; words and sounds that simultaneously feed the mind and nourish the soul.

Speaking to our present dynamic situation, the track is a poignant and timely reminder to take pause; to ground oneself, embrace the unknown, and navigate life’s challenges. It is also a celebration of the determination and bravery that it can take to create that breathing space, and to traverse new and unfamiliar territory.

Like countless other Arts practitioners both in Aotearoa and overseas, Gramsci are also striving to work within the fluid, fluctuating parameters of live performance courtesy of the pandemic which have wreaked havoc upon the Arts and Entertainment industries for the last two years.

While showcasing different facets of the palette of rock music, ‘Into The Hinterland’ follows on from ‘Ourselves’ effortlessly. Since its release in mid November, the stunning video for ‘Ourselves’ has clocked up over 51,000 views and counting. Directed by renowned filmmaker Richard Bell (who has also created music videos for Joy Division, Depeche Mode, Nirvana and U2), the stunning imagery provides the perfect visual accompaniment to the instantly memorable track.

Bell and Gramsci mastermind Paul McLaney are also collaborating on a short film poised for release at the end of February that will feature two tracks from the new album.

With the full album ‘The Hinterlands’ scheduled for release on Friday 11th February, it is going to be an exciting month punctuated with Gramsci greatness!
