Scorn Of Creation

Wielding brutal solos and chaotic blood-ripped vocals in their bag of tricks; Wellington’s Scorn of Creation march all over your face with their vitally heavy self-titled debut album; giving us eight slicing cuts of New Zealand death metal glory. Bringing precise death metal that’s engaging and refreshing, Scorn of Creation has moments that make you genuinely stop what you’re doing and listen…and that’s pretty rare for a jaded ol’ metal bird like myself. Scorn of Creation keep the songs of their debut tight, carefully crafted and quick so the compulsion is to listen again, rather than keep listening to a track that’s lengthy and logy – their attitude seems to be just get in, give it a 25 minute slay, then get out. That slaying proficiency is undeniable in fact, due to how skilled these musicians are; with Scorn of Creation being comprised of the elite of recent NZ metal, sourcing members from the ranks of: Depths, Backyard Burial, Mindfuck and Carnal to name a few.

Is it OK to say a death metal album is delightful? Cause it is! Everything is as it should be and done so exceedingly well that it’s a thrilling ride, with a peculiar juxtaposition at play when you’re listening to Scorn of Creation. Moments of sweet, sweet metal revelry and nostalgia come in waves of comparison to Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, Slayer and best of all Legion era Deicide. Couple that with the most fancy flourishes of new tech death; with plenty of burbling solo scales, thunderous altars of the dead bass, blasty beats too impossible to imagine playing and eardrum tearing vox – it’s a sickening synergy that not once feels played out or on loan from another band. What is on loan from other bands is a couple of little guesties from legend NZ metal dude Dan Birrell of Vixen Execution and Carnal; and also Jolene Tempest (ex-Bulletbelt), to add a little more savagery to the mix. Kicking into it with Realisation (Defying the Crown), it’s the kind of track you promptly break your neck to aided by the unfolding majesty of metal biting at your brain. Other album standouts include: Dante (Traversing the Unknown) with its sexy swing beat, ripe for everyone getting their shake-to-the-snare hand movement on at the next Scorn of Creation pit. The Exodus of Limbo flips from chugging, violent progression to blistering gat squeals with ease; while The Ruin Of The Damned roils with frenetic groove. With an excellent lead up to release in terms of building follow-ship at shows and online on Facey; Scorn of Creation are a quality outfit that trust me, you wanna get involved with from the ground floor up as there’s no doubt the prowess of these lads will bring much metal interest to our shores anew. Revels!
