Artist Profile – Ängie

One of the “perks” of hanging around the Ambient Light office is the constant bombardment of new music hitting our inboxes from around the world. While, admittedly, most of it often gets a cursory listen and is filed into the “share on a slow news day” folder – sometimes a band or an artist will catch our ear and we’ll be instant fans. Case in point, today I received a press release for a young pop singer by the name of Ängie.

You see, the Swedish star has just released remixes of her highly acclaimed new single ‘Spun‘ (out now through Universal). Ängie has enlisted Pink Panda and emerging Swedish producer Beard to take on remix duties of her chilled club anthem.

The London-based, Billboard chart-toppers, Pink Panda have intertwined Ängie’s homage to love, and the joys of sex and getting high, with uplifting synths and down-tempo trap-inspired beats. Beard meanwhile takes ‘Spun’ straight to the dancefloor with a driving four to the floor and big room synths. Good for them.

But with a little research, it seems Ängie is blossoming into a truly international sensation, and unofficial fan clubs celebrating the star have been established across the world in locations as far flung as Brazil and Russia. Her infamous cheeky tongue has seen her acclaimed by broadsheets, scandalise the tabloids and become an international internet sensation. She set Britain alight last year with the release of her highly acclaimed singles ‘Smoke Weed Eat Pussy’ and ‘Housewife Spliffin’, which saw the Daily Star dub her “the most controversial star we’ve ever seen”, and The Sun “the most shocking pop star of 2016,” among a wealth of further shock and awe for the singer.

Now, we here at Ambient Light love the odd bit of controversy, and at times (especially around those early morning deadlines) we have been known to turn the air blue with filthy mouths that would make a sailor blush – so the juxtaposition of Ängie’s often syrupy sweet trap infused pop style backing tracks mixed with her brash (often autotuned) lyrics is something we just can’t get enough of. It’s music Jim, but not as the purists want it to be… Go watch her videos, follow her on social media, hell, go and petition your favourite radio station to put her singles on their playlist – and lets show her that even down here on the other side of the world we’re capable of appreciating interesting new music from even more interesting personalities. This young lady is going to be huge, I hope you’re all prepared!
